What is your true identity? Moonlight is a movie that makes you question this. This amazing drama film written and directed by Barry Jenkins is truly eye-opening for the society. In the film a young boy who is confused about his identity. Don’t have anyone to guide and listen’s his problem that he was facing. At the 74th Golden Globe Awards Moonlight won Best Motion Picture – Drama and was nominated in five other categories. The movie won the Academy Award for Best Picture, along with Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali and Best Adapted Screenplay for Barry Jenkins and McCraney, from a total of eight nominations. In 2017, The New York Times considered it the 20th “Best Film of the 21st Century So Far”.
The movie is divided into three parts/ chapters
In Liberty City, Miami, Cuban drug dealer Juan finds Chiron, a child who doesn’t want to talk to anybody nickname “Little”, hiding from the group of bullies. Chiron stays with Juan and his girlfriend that night and returns him to his mother Paula. Chiron admits to Juan and Teresa that doesn’t love his mother and asks what is meaning of “faggot”. Both of them know this word means and tells Boy that nobody should make fun of that.
The teenager, Chiron avoiding bullies and spending time with Teresa, has lived alone since the death of Juan. Paula continues supporting his addiction with a different kind of stuff. Then he starts feeling some attraction toward Kevin on of his friend. Bullies start making his fun and beat him badly for being gay. Getting fed-up by this, Chiron smashes a chair over Terrel’s back and got arrested. As the police take him out of school, he glares at Kevin.
Now Chiron is grown man, going by the nickname “Black”, deals drugs in Atlanta and receiving a call from his Paula, asking him to visit her in rehab where she was living. While visiting Paula, Chiron accepted that he feels deep regret for his lack of empathy towards her. She feels guilty about the fact that when he wants mother she was not there with him and start crying. One day, he received a call from Kelvin in the place where cook for talking and meeting.
